List of Knitting Pattern Abbreviations
as used in all Emmy Arts patterns

3SK (3 Stitch Knot) = P3tog without slipping sts from left needle, bring yarn to back and knit the same 3 sts together without slipping from needle, bring yarn to front and purl the same 3 sts together once more, then slip sts off left


approx. = approximately


BH (button hole) = yo, K1, slip yo loop over last st on right needle and off needle (no sts increased or decreased)


C2B (Cable 2 to the back) = slip next 2 st to cn, holding cn in back: K2, K2 from cn


C2F (Cable 2 to the front)= slip next 2 st to cn, holding cn in front: K2, K2 from cn


C6L (Cable 6 to the left) = Slip next 3 sts to cn and hold in front, K3 from left needle, K3 from cn


C6R (Cable 6 to the right) = Slip next 3 sts to cn and hold in back, K3 from left needle, K3 from cn

DPNs = double pointed needles
 

Flower = with yarn in back, *slip the next stitch purlwise, dropping the two extra loops; rep from * 4 more times (you should now have 5 large loops on the right needle), **bring yarn to front, slip the 5 sts back to the left needle, bring yarn to back; rep from ** once more, then with yarn in back, slip the five back to the right needle


in = inch


inc = increase (or) increased


JB (jumbo bobble) = (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1) into next st, turn, K7, turn, K7, turn, K7, turn, sl 6 st to right needle, k1, pass the 6 st slipped sts one at a time over the last stitch and off the needle (no sts increased or decreased)


K = Knit

K2L = Knit the first loop of the double yarn stitch on the left needle, then knit the second loop of the double yarn stitch (1 st increased)


K2tog = Knit next 2 stichs together (1 st decreased)


K2togf&b = Knit next 2 sts together through front and back loop (no sts increased or decreased)


K2togtbl = knit 2 stitches together through the back loops (1 st decreased)


K3tog = knit the next three stitches together (2 sts decreased)


K5tog = knit the next five stitches together (4 sts decreased)


Kf&b = Knit into the front and back of the next stitch (1 st increased)


Kfbf = knit through the front, then back, then front of the next stitch (2 sts increased)


Knot = K3, pass the first of these 3 sts over the last two worked and off the needle (1 st decreased)


Loop Stitch = K into the next st without dropping it off the needle. Bring the yarn to the front between the two needles, loop it over your left thumb, then bring the yarn to the back again, between the needles. K the same stitch again, this time dropping it off the left needle, like a normal knit stitch. Insert the left needle tip into the second st from the end on the right needle and bring it over the first st and off the right needle.


LSC (Left Stitch Cable): Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to front, K2, K2 from cn


M1 = Insert the left needle from back under the top strand between the two needles, then knit into the front of the stitch to twist it (1 st increased)


M1L = Insert the left needle from front under the top strand between the two needles, then knit into the back of the stitch to twist it (1 st increased)


M1R = Insert the left needle from back under the top strand between the two needles, then knit into the front of the stitch to twist it (1 st increased)


MB (make bobble) = (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1) into next stitch, turn work, P5, turn work, slide 5 sts from left needle to right needle. *Pass the second stitch on the right needle over the first stitch and off the needle. Repeat from * three times.

nupp = loosely work (K1, yo, K1, yo, K1) into the next stitch


oz = ounce


P = Purl


P2L = Purl the 1st loop of the double yarn stitch on the left needle, then purl the 2nd loop of the double yarn stitch (1 st increased)


P2tog = Purl next two stitches together (1 st decreased)


P3tog = purl the next three stitches together (2 sts decreased)


Pf&b = Purl into the front and back of the next stitch (1 st increased)


place bead = using a small crochet hook, pick up one bead. Insert the hook into the first stitch on the right needle and slide the bead onto the stitch. Replace the stitch on the right needle.


pm = place marker


rem = remain


rep = repeat


RND (or) rnd = round


RNDS (or) rnds = rounds

RS = right side


RSC (Right Stitch Cable) = Sl 2 sts to cn and hold to back, K2, K2 from cn


skpo (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) = slip next stitch to right needle, K1, pass slipped stitch over the last stitch you just knit and off the needle


sl = slip

Smock = With yarn in back, insert right needle knitwise between the 6th and 7th stitches on the left needle. Pick up a loop and bring it between the stitches to the front of the work and place it on the left needle. Pull yarn taut and K2tog (no stitches increased or decreased)


sppo (slip 1, purl 1, pass slipped stitch over) = slip next stitch to right needle, P1, pass slipped stitch over the last stitch you just purled and off the needle


SSK = (slip next stitch to right needle as if to knit) twice, slip the two stitches back to the left needle, then knit the two together (1 st decreased)


st = stitch


sts = stitches


SWT (Slip, Wrap, Turn) = with yarn in back, sl next st as if to purl. Bring the yarn to the front and replace the slipped st back on left needle. Turn work.


thrum = Insert right needle into the next stitch, one round below. Take one of your 5” thrums in the appropriate color and fold it in half over your right index finger (or left index finger if knitting Continental style). Place the thrum loop over the right needle tip, as if it were the working yarn and pull the right needle through the work, as if to knit. The thrum should now be incorporated into your work and appear as a stitch on the right needle. Insert the right needle into the next stitch on the left needle (the active stitch above where you just placed the thrum) and knit the stitch. Insert the left needle tip from left to right through the thrum on the right needle and pass it over the stitch you just knit. The thrum should now be secured in place and you should not have increased any stitches. Pull the two tails of the thrum gently to tighten it in place, then continue onto the next stitch as directed in the pattern.


turn = turn the work in your hands, so that the other side is facing you


UBS = using both strands held together


UCA = using color A


UCB = using color B


WS = wrong side


WS4 (wrap stitch 4 times) = *Bring yarn to front, slip the first stitch on the left needle purlwise to the right needle, bring the yarn to the back, slip the stitch back to left needle; rep from * three more times, then bring yarn to back, slip the stitch to right needle and continue with pattern.

w&t (Wrap and turn) = If working on the RS: bring yarn to front, slip next stitch purlwise to right needle, bring yarn to back, slip the stitch back to the left needle, turn work. You will now have one ‘wrapped stitch’.


If working on the WS: bring yarn to back, slip next stitch purlwise to right needle, bring yarn to front, slip the stitch back
to the left needle, turn work. You will now have one ‘wrapped stitch’.
